West Virginia Hunter Education Association
2025 Scott Kalna
Scott Kalna Hall Of Fame Inductee
Scott Kalna of Canvas, WV Was an instructor in three counties, Nicholas, Pocahontas and Webster. The area lost a good instructor and is missed by those that taught Hunter Education with him, as he was a great team leader. In September of 2021, Covid took a great instructor from among our Hunter Education System. He had retired as a federal law enforcement officer with the U.S. Park and Forest Service. He had served the area as WV Deputy Sheriff with a desire to become a WV Hunter Education Instructor. It was very fitting for his work with the US Parks and Forest Service. With his connections and experience working with the public and serving their interests, he was very accomplished as a Team Leader. He liked having all of the attributes covered like; teaching with technology, bookwork, power point, videos, lecture and demonstration. He used treats of candy to reward the students with the right answers to posed teaching questions throughout the class. His team provided lunch to make it easier for his students too, this included his wife, Christine’s Venison Sloppy Joes & Chili. He worked in the school’s classrooms teaching student’s during the school hours; this takes good cooperation with the school’s administration. Something that is noteworthy is in today’s society it is no easy task to get the school’s system to promote the importance of the Hunter Education Program.• Graduated High School 1986• Graduated Hocking College 1990• US Federal Law Enforcement/Firearms Instructor• Fought Forest Fires/Crew Boss/Security• Certified Sig Sauer Armorer• Deputy to County Sheriff• Life Member WVHEA• WVHEA Instructor of the Year• Volunteer Webster County Firearms Instructor• Nicholas County “Shop With A First Responder” Program• West Virginia Monongahela National Forest Trout Derby• Summit Lake Fishing Derby Volunteer• Worked with Boy Scouts
