West Virginia Hunter Education Association
2022 Sgt. Bob Johnson
Sgt. Bob Johnston was nominated to the West Virginia Hunter Education Hall of Fame for his commitment to details to the Hunter Education program. From his very first assignment to support other outreach groups that support Hunter Education, that teaches children to follow the rules for a hunter’s safety and ethics. He was helping the Greenbrier Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s J.A.K.E.S. program, supporting the efforts of its members to teach young ones to always be safe and make the right decisions. He and the state JAKES coordinator put on a skit that had a young slob hunter charge the stage with a rifle when he heard the seminar presenter make a Gobble Call. Bob Johnson worked with the coordinator and the slob hunter, “Zeke Leadspreader,” ad-libbing to ask questions, pointing out all of the wrong things that the slob hunter did wrong to get himself arrested. He then asked the audience of young JAKES, all of the things they could remember that was wrong. This drove home points that they were sure to remember. So, this shows from the very first of his career, that he would be adaptable to teach a specific or varied audience the principles of hunter safety. Bob has been teaching Hunter Education for over 24 and ½ years. He has an outgoing personality that lends itself to being a Law Enforcement officer and reaching out to support groups. A Hunter Education instructor that’s been a team leader and taught in 26 counties reaching countless students throughout the state. As an RTO he has always made sure that his volunteer instructors had what they needed to carry-out their classes. He always made sure that his volunteer instructors were aware of any changes in policy, and has certified instructors and carried out recertifications at the Rendezvous for several years. He seems very knowledgeable to answer questions the instructors may have. Some of the other reasons for him being nominated are; He has been married to his wife, Kim for 32 years, with 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren. He is also a United States Air Force Veteran, a Sgt. WVDNR police for 24 ½ years, and 14 ½ years as a Regional Training Officer serving in 3 Districts, a Life Member of the NRA, a West Virginia State Firearms Instructor – (Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun) and a founding member of the Patriots Motorcycle Club , in October 2016, after the devastating floods in Greenbrier County, Donating over $40,000.00 to the community
