West Virginia Hunter Education Association
2024 Steve Cox
Steve Cox nominated for being the “Go To,” guy that other instructors got when they needed something from a fellow instructor over the course of more than 32 years as an instructor. He also became his team’s lead instructor conducting classes in the two counties he taught in. Several other instructors that have worked with him say that they believe him to be a worthy candidate to the WVHEHOF. He grew up in the Short Gap area of Fort Ashby. He was raised on a dairy farm and is no stranger to hard work, making him a successful volunteer HE instructor. Steve moved to Pinto, Maryland and farming there. He was in 4-H as a youth, getting awards for Forestry and Dairy. He has applied the things making him successful in his young career to set the commitment to the duties of a volunteer HE instructor. Some of the other involvements that shows he works hard in accomplishing the WVHEA mission are:
• Worked as a plumber’s helper and drove truck for local distributer • Served in the Army. 3 years w/2 years in Germany in a NATO Group. Received letters and commendations for it • Worked with American Red Cross Blood Banks • Fort Ashby VFD for a time and Keyser Reserve Squad • Worked Westvaco Papermill 37 ½ years • Member American Legion Post 41, Finance officer and Honor Guard • Worked with and helped his grandchildren in 4-H and FFA • Girl and Boy Scouts helper • WV Dairy Show, recognized as Dairy Show Honoree • Helps each year as volunteer for a Jennings Randolph Disabled Veteran’s Hunt • Life Member NRA and several other hunting groups
